About Maniram Dewan

Born on the 17th of April, 1806, Maniram Dutta Baruah, popularly known as Maniram Dewan was undoubtedly the greatest Assamese of the first half of the 19th century. It was Maniram Dewan who introduced the British to the tea grown by the Singpho people. He was appointed as the Dewan of the Assam Tea Company at Nazira in 1839. But by the mid 1840s, he left the Company owing to difference and went his own way. He established tea gardens at Cinnamara in Jorhat and at Singlo in present day Sivasagar district and became the first Indian tea planter. Maniram Dewan also ventured into various other businesses and trades including iron smelting, salt production, boat making, bell metal, elephant trade, brick making, coal supply, building construction, etc. He established a number of markets that included Borhat in Dibrugarh.

Maniram had turned against the British because of the way the British created problems for his business. He tried to petition the British against their unjust conduct and tried for the restoration of the Ahom rule which had ended with the Treaty of Yandabo in 1826. The rebellion of 1857 gave him an opportunity to overthrow British rule in Assam.
